NAYD QUESTIONNAIRE 2010

RESULTS SUMMARY

Preamble

NAYD was established in March 2007. It is a network for African youths to know one another in the field of development and hopefully work together wherever possible thus creating a platform to then create opportunities for African youths through sustainable development, to involve young people in an African network to preach the message of peace, human rights, HIV/AIDs, and the UN MDGs. NAYD wants to make young people in Africa be the change. It aims at making them potential activists for the promotion of sustainable development, social justice, gender equality, and education for African children and peer groups across Africa.

The questionnaire was active in early 2010. The intention was to get views on how NAYD has performed to date and establish the way forward. It was split into our magazine INSPIRE, the WEB pages and communication systems, NAIROBI summit, NAYD structure and Final Comments. Where comments views have been requested these have been optimised to save repetition where possible rather than noting all individual comments.

Thanks to those who have offered to help in any way, whether  through INSPIRE, the web pages or as Country Co-ordinators.  If you have any further comments please feel free to contact me direct or through the NAYD group

thanks,

Paul Shaw

Ø  I have never been notified.

Ø  I’m just new to this and would like to know more about it. Kindly let me get more information about this forum and what you do.

Ø  I don't think I have ever had information about the conferences.

Ø  Timing.

Ø  I can’t get access to it.

Ø  Other time commitments.

Please use the box below to give us your thoughts about NAYD WEB conferences

Ø  They should be on specific topics to ensure concentration of efforts and meaningful results, and training conferences organised for such training purposes.

Ø  Yes they should be of specific topics considering the most essential and sensitive.

Ø  Specific topics but should include other matters. Specific time too is very important because for all the time that I have been attending the meeting the respect of time has always been a failure.

Ø  It has been a success but needs some improvement as far as announcements are concerned to enable all NAYDians get in time.

Ø  Specific issue should be tried rather than people coming up with all issues. The topic of the day should be posted in YAHOO GROUP.

Ø  It is sometimes not well organised. There should be a way that only one can talk at a time so if you want to talk alert the moderator and he/she will give the opportunity to do so.

Ø  To be used for training and members empowerment.

40%

No

60%

If you were invited to attend but decided not to come could you let us know why?

Ø  I couldn't attend due to lack of funds

Ø  First of all, we had the promise to be supported by the government especially the ministry of youths. On the last minute, we have received the letter from this ministry and to other supporters, that there is no partnership between them and NAYD. This why this network is needed.

Ø  We didn't find support to go there because we don't capacity

Ø  Funds conflicts

Ø  Commitments especially in academics which could not allow me to take a whole week out of college.

Do you think NAYD should organise summits in the future?

Yes

No

0%

Maybe

5%

If Yes what sort of format should it take?

Ø  Local topics:1.issues affecting the youths 2.How youths should be empowered to self development 3.Awareness of various issues that youths need to know in detail

Ø  International - 1 week and with a range of topics

Ø  National and Regional forums.

Ø  NAYD should organise international seminars for at least one week on a yearly basis. This should be rotating from country to country.

Ø  National summit 1day to 1week.  Youths faced with MDGs; Climate change; Haiti earthquake; HIV/AIDS etc

Ø  First, we should organised regional and then on a continental summit. National for 04 days. Girls Rights/health hazards/climate change etc

Ø  National, regional and International

Ø  It all depends on matters going on at the time considered

Ø  Regional – 4 days

Ø  Local

Ø  International - 7days

Ø  A day is enough and then you discuss a specific topic. You don't have to be broad like the last summit.

Ø  National and International - 1 week

Ø  Regional, national and international to create more awareness and consciousness of other youths cultures, strengths ,innovations etc Topics should be varied just like in the previous summit meeting.

Any other suggestions?

Ø  Mobilization of the youth to participate in their activities.

Ø  Partner with local investment firms and the governments for a better cause. It is better to supervise the different Country Co-ordinators to improving the country network

Ø  They should try to be more present and try to see that much of this work is done

Ø  Make them like country NGO

Ø  Working closely with national members and NAYD leaders

Ø  Country coordinators should also have other regional officers to oversee planning and coordination of events. The regional officers should help in policy implementation in liaison to NAYD's agenda and principles.

Ø  Just not sure about the implications of NGO status in each country eg can an NGO get customs duty waivers in every African country and do NGO’s work together in many countries? Think a coordinator would have more to do and should delegate some of these tasks. Conditions are so varied in each country how could a coordinator living in say Nairobi be assessed against one in rural Uganda?

Even though Country Co-ordinators work on a voluntary basis do you think their position should be reviewed on a regular basis against a set of criteria?

Yes

90%

No

10%

If 'Yes' how often should this review take place?

10%

3 years

14%

Do you think there is a need for Regional Co-ordinators?

Yes

81%

No

19%

If Yes what do you think their role should be?

Ø  To raise funds, organise events at regional level, carry out regional development projects and oversee the country co-ordinators etc.

Ø  They should ensure harmonised way of carrying out the activities to ensure they achieve their set goals.

Ø  Same as country co-ordinators.

Ø  Monitoring and evaluation of programs.

Ø  Ameliorating on the network within members of those regions given that country coordinator is in the Nation’s capital.

Ø  To coordinate the activities of NAYD at regional level.

Ø  To assist the already existing Co-ordinators in each country

Ø  To monitor, evaluate all relative activities

Ø  The same but in an upper level.

Ø  They will help the country Co-ordinators to develop their roles in their countries, to help them to be connected in government development projects realization and to enhance the connection between the different countries in the region.

Ø  Experience sharing

Ø  To work hand in hand with country coordinators to ensure NAYD function in each country.

Ø  To coordinate regional activities.

Ø  Formulation of policies.  Registration of new members. Organisation of events. Briefing and coordination of activities. Linkages and networking

Ø  Absolutely no! We need to devolve and empower local country coordinators. We don’t want to get top heavy and then overrule local people and stifle progress by toeing (policy). We ought to be training people in conferences. Our leaders should serve not over-rule

What do you think the selection criteria should be for becoming a co-ordinator?

Ø  Academic qualifications experience

Ø  Commitment to NAYD activities

Ø  Has to have the knowledge and experience in a relevant field

Ø  Previous experience and also the attitude. One should be self motivated and result oriented. Academic basis and NAYD experience

Ø  Ready to improve networking not only on the net but in other media. Readiness to organise regional, local and individual meetings. Draw up projects and look for funding from donors etc Commitment to work for NAYD and previous work experience in youth work

Ø  All what it takes to be a good leader

Ø  Knowledge, capacity.

Ø  The love of Africans.

Ø  A co-ordinator has to work closely with youth and government.

Ø  Availability. Not pre-occupied with any NGO work. Voluntary service with stipend to enhance work.

Ø  A set of rules should be set aside. Consultations should be made for that.

Ø  On line election.

Ø  Dedication and commitment

Ø  Educational background and access to the internet

Ø  Set standards of leadership. One’s commitment and dedication to Nayd activities. If possible a fair and free elections to be done or an election committee to be set and on line recruitment of coordinators done based on a given questionnaire responses from applicants

Ø  The person should have a proven record of what is important qualities for the role

Please add any general comments you have about NAYD and its future in the box provided below.

Ø  There are very few youths in Africa that know about NAYD. Measures should be taken to create more awareness.

Ø  Networking as a common aspect to help get more ideas.

Ø  Very excellent work.

Ø  NAYD has really created partnerships and collaboration between many youth organisations, hence it has been a success since its creation.

Ø  It will be the best pillar for youth’s development.

Ø  Keep the goals of NAYD and be realistic.

Ø  This is an initiative that must just move on. We should embark on new strategies for recruitment and empowerment.
